Not all Calories are Nutrient Dense, Solve with Soil Health

Our current food production system is not producing the most nutrient-dense crops possible. With a focus on yield and quantity over quality, our soils have become depleted of essential nutrients that are crucial for the growth and development of plants. However, biochar, a form of charcoal that is created by burning plant material in a low-oxygen environment, has shown great promise in enhancing the nutrient density of crops while also reducing the need for water and fertilizers.

Bob Waun, an investor in farmland and former banker, has recognized the potential of biochar in agriculture. "Biochar is a game changer for agriculture," he states. "It can help increase soil health, reduce water usage, and improve crop yield and quality."

Studies have shown that biochar can improve soil health by increasing water retention and reducing the need for fertilizers. In one study conducted by researchers at the University of Florida, biochar was found to significantly increase the water-holding capacity of sandy soils, which are typically poor at retaining moisture. This resulted in higher crop yields and reduced irrigation requirements, leading to significant cost savings for farmers.

Biochar can also improve the nutrient density of crops by increasing the availability of essential minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, and calcium. This is achieved by binding these minerals to the biochar, making them more available to plants over time. In a study conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois, biochar was found to increase the levels of calcium and magnesium in lettuce plants, leading to a 20-30% increase in yield.

In addition to improving crop yield and nutrient density, biochar can also play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. By sequestering carbon in the soil, biochar can help mitigate climate change while also improving soil health and fertility.

As more farmers and researchers recognize the potential of biochar in agriculture, we can expect to see increased adoption of this technology in the coming years.
